Everyone needs help at some point in their life. Whether in exams or just keeping afloat in this ship called life, any sort of support or lifeboat will definitely go a long way. A lot of students today face some sort of trouble. As believers, here are three things from the book of Proverbs that we can do to be of help to our fellow students as they face the storms of life.
Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
(Proverbs 29:20)
When a friend of ours pours out what he or she is going through, it’s quite tempting to give them advice and draw from what we’ve experienced in the past. While this may not necessarily be wrong, the Bible encourages us to slow down and ensure that we really understand where the person is coming from before we pass judgment or give advice. It is in slowing down that we see better, judge clearer, and speak more effectively.
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
(Proverbs 18:24)
Oftentimes, when a friend of ours is in trouble, us being there for them is all they really need. The troubles of life can easily isolate us from one another, and many times, the gadgets intended to bring us closer become the very things that keep us apart. We have to intentionally be there for our friends, so that they can have a shoulder to cry on or a friend they can rejoice with.
Being there for others refreshes and encourages those who need the uplifting and even us, who are helping them. Like the Victory group leader or accountability partner who stayed with us when things didn’t go as planned, when our hearts broke, or when we felt like no one was there, we can be used by God to be there for others regardless of their situation.
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
(Proverbs 15:1)
Helping others must always be rooted in love; and sometimes, helping others means correcting them. Connecting to someone before correcting him or her will always be a good start in order for the correction to be received well. As we connect to that person, we will be able to correct them with gentleness and respect, intending to show God’s love for them and not merely correct a bad behavior.
We can always help others when our intention is to show God’s love to them, in the hope that they will see how much God loves them.
