Mighty God

I recently met with one of our student leaders for coffee. His message to me two nights before led us to that morning conversation:

“Can I ask you a question? I have a lot of friends who have anxiety and I really wanna help them. I’ve been praying for them and I’ve been talking to them, but nothing changes. Sometimes I’m running out of words to say, and it just sucks that I can’t really help them.”

Of course we talked about what God’s Word has to say about the matter and the practical steps that he can take. But we both agreed that at the end of the day, we can only do so much for the people around us. We have to trust God that He is the ultimate Savior.

Can people help people? Can people save people? Yes, but only to an extent.

Think about almost losing a mobile game when your teammate suddenly saves all of you for an epic comeback! What a way to end the game! But when you played the next game, your opponents won no matter how hard your teammate tried to save the team again.

Think about almost failing at Physics and your friend, who is so good at it, comes along to help you understand the concepts. Thanks to him, right? But on exam day, you’re by yourself.

Some of our friends call us saviors, but only to an extent—ordinary and not so special. We can only save people to an extent.

But here’s the good news: when we can only do so much for others, Jesus is our Mighty God.

Think about our sin—the sin that easily entangles and slows us down; the sin that steals our joy and our lives.

Think about our broken relationships—when we can’t bring back a loved one who left or who passed away.

Think about our lack—when it’s Christmas and we lack finances or we are in the brink of loneliness.

My dentist can save me from a toothache. Your friend can cheer you up for a moment. But none of them, no matter how influential and powerful they may seem, can save us from the bondage of sin, mend our brokenness, or fill our greatest need. For these, we need more than just an ordinary savior.

That’s when we realize that there are things in this world that only Jesus can save us from.

Jesus is the only one who can save us from sin, shame, guilt, and fear of the afterlife.

Romans 5:8-9

Jesus is the only one who can change hearts and mend broken relationships.

2 Corinthians 5:17-18

Jesus is the only one who can give us wholeness in the midst of lack.

John 14:27

No one else can.

Jesus Christ is not just your usual savior—He is the Mighty One.

He is mighty—powerful and strong enough to save us from our fall. He picks us up when we’re down in the dumps.

Our guilt and shame, He removed.

2 Corinthians 5:19

Our fears, taken away by His perfect love.

1 John 4:18

Our hearts, transformed to love and forgive.

1 John 4:19

Our minds, renewed to focus on His Word rather than our circumstance.

Romans 12:1-2

This Christmas and until forever, we have Jesus as our Mighty God. When things are falling apart, when friends are no longer in sight, when you are falling away, run to our Mighty God because He is more than willing and able to save you.

In fact, He already did. And that’s something worth rejoicing over and over and over again.

This Christmas, in what area of your life do you need to see Jesus as the Mighty God?

Job has acquired a new skill recently: writing blog articles with 300 words or less. He is passionate about kingdom work and always has a running movie in his head. If he were not the campus director of Every Nation Campus Fort Bonifacio, he would have been a movie producer or a social worker. He and his wife, Its, have two hyperactive sons, Caleb and Zaiden, who give them a workout each day.
