The Holy Sprit. The Holy Ghost. The Advocate. The Teacher. The Comforter. The Spirit of Truth, Revelation, Grace, Might, and much more. The Holy Spirit is known by many names.
Many people can be familiar with the idea of the Holy Spirit, but still be unclear on how to get to know Him or how He helps us live the Christian life. Because of this, I want to start off by clearing up some questions about who He is.
Here’s a crucial thing to remember: the Holy Spirit is a Person. He’s the third Person in the Trinity. God Himself! He’s not an it, a thing, a force, or an energy. This means we can get to know Him and He interacts with us.
Honestly, as a Christian, the better question to ask is, what does He NOT empower me to do?
Everything about the Christian life is only possible by the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s by the Holy Spirit’s power that we’re born again (John 3:6-8). The Holy Spirit reminds us that we’re children of God. The Holy Spirit makes reading and understanding the Bible possible (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit produces spiritual fruit like love, joy, and peace in our life (Galatians 5:22-23). The Holy Spirit helps us pray according to the thoughts of God (Romans 8:26-27). The Holy Spirit empowers us to move in spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).
To put it simply, everything we need to live out the Christian life is only made possible by the Holy Spirit. We can have patience in the most inconvenient of situations. The Holy Spirit makes us love our enemies. We can put to death the sins of our old life by the Holy Spirit.
A significant part of the Holy Spirit’s purpose is to empower us to be witnesses of Jesus to the world (Acts 1:8). The purpose of the Holy Spirit’s power in our lives is to make us more like Christ so we can proclaim Christ more.
Working with Him more starts with realizing that we’re already dependent on the Holy Spirit as we are. There is nothing that we can do apart from Him. However, I want to share with you a very special method one can use to get the Holy Spirit to partner with you—are you ready?
Ask. Ask God the Father to send you the Holy Spirit to empower you today. It’s that simple.
Try this. Pray and ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit to help you with your day ahead. You might want to describe to Him your schedule or tasks that are coming up. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you proclaim Jesus in your actions and words. You can also pray all throughout your day, asking the Holy Spirit for strength. It’s that simple.
When you meet and partner with the Holy Spirit, you’ll find your life open to a whole new level of spiritual power. Whatever that looks like, two things are certain: it will definitely make you more like Jesus and give you the ability to proclaim Him more.
